Pineapple Express to bring rounds of rain and mountain snow to California and Pacific Northwest

Over the next week or so, California (particularly the northern portion) and the Pacific Northwest, is set to see heavy rain, mountain snow and strong winds. The system that will be bringing the stormy weather is being fueled by El Nino and will be accompanied by an atmospheric river, or “Pineapple Express.” Timing wise, the weather is set to start tomorrow and continue through the week.

Potential impacts include:

  • Mudslides and rockslides, particularly near burn areas. Significant rises on rivers and streams is also likely.
  • Power outages and downed trees due to strong winds. The Sierra Nevada may see gusts of 100+ mph over ridges, while the foothills could see gusts to 80 mph with the valleys seeing 60 mph.
  • Moderate coastal flooding and damage to coastal structures. The threat of rip currents may be high as well.
