Up to One Foot of Snow Predicted for Great Lakes Region

Lake effect snow is predicted to begin in the Great Lakes region Thursday morning and continue through late Saturday morning. The heaviest snow is forecast to fall on Thursday night into the first part of New Year's Day.

A widespread 3-6 inches of snow is predicted downwind of lakes Erie and Ontario with 6-12 inches possible in some areas. Areas of upstate New York may see up to 2 feet.

Lighter snow is predicted in Cleveland, Syracuse, Buffalo and Grand Rapids. A second system is forecast to begin on Sunday and last into Monday before drier weather returns to the region next week.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for travel as periods of heavy snow may cause treacherous driving conditions.
