Don't Say Yes: Beware Recent

Multiple news outlets are reporting the existence of a recent scam in which a caller asks questions like, “Can you hear me?” “Are you the homeowner?” or “Do you pay the household telephone bill?” These scammers plan to record you saying the word “yes” so they can use that recording to fraudulently authorize charges on a utility bill or credit card. If you receive a phone call like this, hang up immediately.

Authorities warn that the scammers may claim to be calling on behalf of a government agency, like Social Security or the IRS. However, government officials do not initiate communication by telephone—they send communications in the mail.

If you believe that you have been victimized by this type of scam, check your bills and credit card statements carefully, and report and dispute anything you don’t recognize.
